Traveling in Europe became much easier when frontier controls at borders
were removed in about half of the the EU member states. The Schengen
agreement replaced internal border controls with controls at the external borders of the EU.
The Schengen agreement also established a common visa policy.
The EU member states that have signed the Schengen agreement in full are:

- Denmark
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Italy
- Luxembourg
- the Netherlands
- Portugal
- Spain
- Sweden
Ireland and the United Kingdom have not yet signed the agreement.
